Putu Wijaya is an extraordinarily prolific author. He has written more than thirty novels, forty plays, various film and television scripts, and many short stories and essays. He is also known for Teater Mandiri, widely regarded as Indonesia’s foremost theatre collective. Putu’s works have won numerous awards, and he has received recognition from the international community, including a fellowship to study kabuki in Japan, a residency at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, and a Fulbright scholarship to teach Indonesian theatre at US universities. His works have been translated into a number of foreign languages.
